Our History

By the late 1990s, the Washington D.C. Public School System (DCPS) was in crisis. School conditions were extremely poor: facilities in disrepair, many classrooms with no textbooks, and a lack of quality teaching. Parents and community members struggled to find any points of access regarding their children's education. To bridge this information gap, a group of concerned citizens founded DC VOICE in 1999 to champion the community's need for objective data about DCPS.

In the last 11 years. DC VOICE has reported on high schools, facilities school reorganization, special education, and other issues affecting quality education in the District. We also recognize the diverse makeup of this city and the importance of including all voices, therefore have published reports in multiple language
